Hoewel de Stray Cats aanvankelijk een fenomeen waren in het Verenigd Koninkrijk, delen van Europa, Japan en Australië, duurde het tot de release in 1982 van Built For Speed dat zij de enorme erkenning en het succes kregen dat zou volgen. Zware rotaties op het toen nieuw gevormde MTV-muziekkanaal droegen de boodschap bij het Amerikaanse publiek en het duurde niet lang voordat hun Amerikaanse debuut nummer twee werd in de Billboard charts en in de volgende 18 maanden meer dan twee miljoen albums verkochten. Regelmatig toeren in Noord-Amerika werd nu essentieel en het was op zo'n tour dat de Cats voor het eerst live werden uitzonden. De show in kwestie werd gespeeld in Massey Hall in Toronto en werd live uitgezonden op zowel radio als tv.
