In 1968 werd Status Quo's eerste hit "Pictures of Matchstick Men" uitgebracht en al snel volgde het debuutalbum. De single bereikte # 7 in het VK en blijft de enige grote hit van de band in de VS, waar het #12 bereikte. Picturesque Matchstickable Messages From The Status Quo bevat verschillende covers, waaronder "Green Tambourine" van The Lemon Pipers en "Spicks and Specks" van The Bee Gees.De Zuid-Londense leden Alan Lancaster (bas) en Francis Rossi (gitaar) waren de oorspronkelijke leden en oprichters van Status Quo. Voorheen bekend als The Spectres en later omgedoopt tot Traffic of Traffic Jam, vestigden ze zich in 1967 met Status Quo als hun bandnaam.
