More than a half-century after its founding, Ricardo Bofill Taller de Arquitectura (RBTA) continues to redefine the boundaries of contemporary architecture and urban design. As the first independent publication about Ricardo Bofill's work since 1985, this celebratory and critical book surveys the entirety of RBTA's legacy with a particular emphasis on the last 30 years of the practice, and includes such projects as the Madrid Congress Centre, 1992; Terminals 1, 2011, and 2, 1992, at Barcelona Airport; the W Hotel; Economia Newsroom, 2013, in Prague; and the Mohammed VI Polytechnic University, 2016, in Morocco; as well as headquarters buildings for Shiseido, Cartier, JC Decaux and others. Founded in 1963 and currently led by Ricardo Bofill, Ricardo Bofill Jr and Pablo Bofill, RBTA operates out of La Fabrica, a converted ex-cement factory on the outskirts of Barcelona. As a world unto its own, La Fabrica is emblematic of RBTA's legacy as a practice with a world-making vision, an insatiable appetite for innovation and a penchant for fusing functionality with timelessness. Under the collaborative expertise of an international team from over 20 different countries, Bofill's legacy spans 40 countries with more than 1,000 projects across a multitude of scales and building typologies. From the super-saturated compositions of projects such as La Muralla Roja, 1968, on the Spanish coast, to the monumental Les Espaces d'Abraxas social housing development, 1982, outside of Paris, Bofill's contributions to twentieth-century architecture and urban design are unquestioned. Yet how the practice has continued to transform and evolve in order to respond to twenty-first-century architecture's new demands has yet to be documented. As such, Ricardo Bofill Taller de Arquitectura addresses the work of the firm from its inception through to the present, and is one of Artifice's most important recent titles, along with those on the work of Colin St John Wilson, Alvar Aalto, Alan Colquhoun, Berthold Lubetkin and Michael Wilford with James Stirling.
